« PNGO´s position regarding the Goldstone Report »

On October 2nd, 2009, the Palestinian Authority withdrew of its draft resolution supporting the recommendations contained in the Goldstone Report, resulting in a deferral of a vote to endorse the report in the Human Rights Council to March 2010. The report suggests that war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity were committed by the Israeli military during its 23-day offensive in Gaza from 27 December 2008 to 18 January 2009.

As denounced in its last statement, PNGO considers that this move by the Palestinian Authority (PA) is an insult to the victims of Operation Cast Lead, and actively facilitates the ongoing impunity of suspected Israeli war criminals. For these reasons, it called alongside with many other Palestinian organizations and political parties to hold a meeting and to demonstrate on October 5th to show the Palestinian people''s bewilderment towards the PA.

This demonstration was as well an opportunity to express the concern of the
Palestinian civil society about the Israeli policy of annexation, judaization, ethnic cleansing of Jerusalem as well as the assaults and provocations towards its holy sites.

The different figures and organizations of the civil society and the political scene gathered and expressed the following:

They affirmed their refusal and condemnation to the Palestinian Authority´s request to delay the Human Rights Council''s endorsement of the UN Goldstone  Report.

They also declared their adherence to our inalienable right of prosecuting war criminals of Israel, and ensure the accountability of the State of Israel for its war crimes against the Palestinian people, property, and holy sites.

Considering the Palestinian Authority´s action as irresponsible, dangerous, and having a negative impact on their rights and trust of the friends and defenders of the Palestinian people''s rights, they affirmed the following:

  • A professional, independent and neutral Commission of Inquiry should be formed by re spected judicial figures, a representative of the Palestinian civil society organizations which enjoy a consultative role in the UN General Assembly, and representatives of parliamentary blocs in cooperation with the National Council and Executive Committee of the PLO in order to investigate the circumstances and the people responsible for this action.
  • The PLO must continue the Palestinian struggle by pressuring the UN to adopt and act upon the recommendations of the Goldstone report.
  • The international organizations must proceed with their efforts to prevent the impunity of Israeli war criminals.
  • The Palestinian people, national parties and organizations must fight the Israeli policy of annexation, judaization, and assaults on the holy sites of Jerusalem.

At the end of the meeting, the various participants agreed on maintaining their efforts to enforce these recommendations.
